FORMER ECU Joondalup winger Tommy Amphlett says this weekend’s A-League Youth grand final at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium will be the biggest game he’s played.

Amphlett (21) is on a rapid rise in the football world since leaving the Jacks last September for a full-time contract with Perth Glory.

Now after making five appearances for the Glory senior team, Amphlett is one of the star attractions in the championship decider against Gold Coast United which will be the curtain raiser to the A-League grand final.

“Everyone is buzzing,” he said.

“We’re all excited, it’s the chance for all of us to play in front of a big crowd, everyone is looking forward to it and hopefully we can make amends for not winning the minor premiership.”

After finishing the season in second place on the table, Glory Youth qualified for the big match with a 1-0 win over Adelaide United in last Sunday’s semi-final.

Their opponent upset Central Coast 3-1 and Amphlett knows his team is in for a tough match.

“They are a very good side and obviously they’ve got a couple of first team players so it’s going to be a hard game, especially given it’s a final.”

But Saturday’s match at Etihad will be a totally foreign experience for several reasons with some of Amphlett’s team-mates having never been to the ground, let alone played there.

Football scouts from around the world also will be watching, making this match extra special.

“If there is any time to impress it’s definitely now because there will be a lot of people watching and it’s a big chance for all the lads to show what they can do,” he said.

Win or lose, Amphlett is grateful of all the support he’s had since starting his blossoming career as a 12-year-old at ECU.

“I’ll always be Joondalup boy, I love that club,” he said.

“I’ve had some good coaches there, Mick Lyons, Willie Hurd, Willie McNally and John Brown and they keep continuing to develop great players like Shane Lowry and Rhys Williams.”
