MAYLANDS resident Alan Alder was honoured for his lifetime commitment to the Australian dance industry at last week’s West Australian Dance Awards.

The Canberra-born man, who served in the Australian Army before winning a scholarship to the Royal Ballet School in 1957, won the lifetime achievement award at last Thursday’s event.

After starring in leading roles in many productions, Alan spent nine years as head of the dance department at the WA Academy of Performing Arts and became an Ausdance board member more than a decade ago.

Innaloo’s Jennifer Provins and Scarborough’s Sergey Pevnev were recognised for their efforts after winning awards for Most Outstanding Performance.

Jennifer won for her rendition of the role of Ms Drosselmeyer in West Australian Ballet’s season of Nutcracker after successfully capturing the persona of the character.

She was praised by judges for her dance technique and sense of drama and musicality in the performance.

Sergey took out the award for most outstanding male after portraying the character of Albrecht in WA Ballet’s production of Giselle.

The Russian-born artist was singled out for his emotionally charged performances and his powerful technique.
