What working families really want

So Julia and Tony are offering us increasing amounts of child care, parental leave and the like.

Ho hum.

Three of us working mums were having a chat recently following the 'mum is late for work' drive to the office, after plaiting hair, making three different types of sandwiches and remembering to feed the cat.

None of us were particularly impressed with Julia or Tony. None of us inspired, enthused or even truth be told, remotely interested.

Our needs are simple.

And if politicians were involved in such things, they would probably win our vote.

We just want to watch our kids get their honour certificates.

It really is as simple as that.

It's the cry of working mums everywhere. Enter any school assembly anywhere in Australia and you will see a row of anxious looking parents, tapping their toes, texting their bosses and looking at their watches.

School principals: Why oh why do you put the certificate giving part at the END of the assembly?

Yes, the kindy kids look adorable dressed as sunbeams, and yes, any other time I would love to hear your speech about the need for the Year 4 boys to tuck their shirts in, but I DON"T HAVE TIME.

Please, for the sake of all working parents, put the certificate giving at the start of the assemblies, so we can clap and wave to our kids and feel like good parents before dashing to the car park.

It's a guaranteed vote getter for working families.

This may be a silly question, but have you tried asking the principal?

I don't fancy your chances of making school assemblies into an election issue :D
